... and where was this deal when I needed it for a shoot two weeks ago! The Pentax AF400T was on my "wish I had" list. Up for auction was just the thing and it was showing no movement from others and so I put in a low bid. The item description was vague and I surmised that it was non-working in some form and so did the other folks viewing the item as I was the only person bidding on it in the end. Well, I won the super low bid and it arrived here in just a week. I figured that this was going to be a long project like the Strobonar flash.
First test... batteries in and dead as can be. Voltmeter said that no power on the battery pack. So the problem was not the flash? Under close examination...
...signs of an exploded battery problem in the lid of the battery pack. The contact were an easy clean-up and the batteries are back in, but the sound of the flash charging was very weak. So a disassembly of the contact pad and a look underneath was a bigger issue. The acid did eat copper away and under the bright blue was black char and not much metal left to conduct the current.
Some copper ribbon and a little insulating varnish and now it is all set. The flash itself was working fine.
